Off the Grid August

It’s August and the summer is flying by! As I prepare for the new school year, I am taking this month to disconnect a bit more than usual. I hope to take a step back, reflect on moments of growth, as well as the next steps forward… offline!

Recently, I read some tips on healthy social media use that may support goals for an “Off the Grid August” (see below). While it doesn’t have to be a full disconnect from online use, I appreciated the focus on offline connections and meaningful, intentional interactions.

Here’s to preparing for another term of learning in our beautiful profession!

Tips for Off the Grid August:

Practice gratitude: rather than focusing on what you don’t have, focus on the things in your life that give you reason to be grateful and/or happy. Research has shown that mindful gratitude positively impacts one’s feelings and overall mental well-being.

Use social media to spread positivity and kindness: share inspiring stories, quotes, videos, and follow others who share similar content.

Seek out authentic, offline connections: rather than using social media to check in on friends and family, pick up the phone and have a live conversation! Even better, make a plan to meet in person. Scrolling through carefully curated social posts simply isn’t as rewarding as an authentic, meaningful conversation.

Manage screen time: a ‘digital detox’ can be a powerful thing!
