Family therapy and family counselling to improve communication, ease conflict, and help your family through change, together.

Family therapy, also called family counselling, views individual problems within the context of the family system. It brings parents, children, siblings, and sometimes extended family members together in sessions guided by a therapist. The goal is to improve communication, resolve conflicts, understand family roles and dynamics, and foster a healthier, more supportive family environment for everyone involved.
Family therapy and family counselling are two names for the same service. At Culminate Therapy, it's offered in person at our Hintonburg office in Ottawa and virtually anywhere in Ontario, and sessions can include the whole family or just the family members most involved in the concern.
Family therapy can be helpful in a wide range of situations. Common reasons families come to us include:
Family therapy addresses issues affecting the family as a whole, and you don't need to be in crisis to come in: some families simply want to strengthen how they support one another.
The two services overlap, but the focus is different. Family therapy works with the relationships between family members, bringing several of you together to change the patterns you're all part of. Child & teen therapy focuses on one young person, with sessions of their own and parents involved along the way.
If the concern is mainly about how your family gets along, family therapy is usually the place to start. If it's mainly about what one child or teen is going through, such as anxiety, low mood, or school stress, child & teen therapy may be a better fit. Not sure? Talk it through during your free 20-minute consultation, and we'll help you choose the right starting point.
Our therapists utilize various systemic approaches, recognizing that each family member's behaviour affects the entire system. Common models include:
Sessions involve identifying unhelpful patterns, improving communication skills, setting boundaries, and strengthening relationships within the family.
Engaging in family therapy can lead to:

Yes. The two terms are used interchangeably, and at Culminate Therapy they describe the same service: sessions that work with the relationships between family members, not just one person's concerns.
It depends on the concern. Some sessions involve the whole family, others focus on parents and one child, and your therapist may meet with different combinations of family members as the work progresses. You'll decide together what makes sense for your family.
Yes. Separation, divorce, and co-parenting are common reasons families come in. Your therapist will talk with you about who should attend each session, and virtual sessions can make it easier for co-parents in separate homes to take part.
Yes. If your child or teen would benefit from one-on-one support, our child and teen therapy service offers sessions focused on them. We'll help you decide whether family sessions, individual sessions, or a combination is the right starting point.
Family sessions typically run 60 minutes, with 90-minute sessions available when more room is needed for everyone to be heard.
