Online Therapy at Culminate Group in Ottawa

About Online Therapy

Virtual Therapy, Anywhere in Ontario

Online therapy at Culminate Group is not a scaled-down version of in-person care: it's the same therapists, the same evidence-based approaches, the same session length, and the same fees, delivered over a secure video connection. If you live in Ontario, you can work with our Ottawa-based team without ever setting foot in our office: from Kanata or Orléans, from Kingston or Toronto, or from a small town hours from the nearest therapist accepting new clients.

Every therapist at Culminate Group offers virtual sessions, and many clients move fluidly between formats: in person at our Hintonburg office when it's convenient, online when it isn't. You don't have to choose one for good.

How Virtual Sessions Work

We run our practice (booking, reminders, and virtual sessions) through Jane, a Canadian practice-management platform built for healthcare providers and designed to comply with Ontario's health-privacy law, PHIPA (the Personal Health Information Protection Act). Here's what the process looks like:

  • Book online: Choose a time at culminategroup.janeapp.com or request a consultation through our website, and an intake specialist will help you schedule.
  • Get your secure link: Before your appointment, you'll receive an email with a private link to your video session. There's no account to configure and no software to install: sessions run in your web browser on a computer, tablet, or phone.
  • Join from a private space: At your appointment time, click the link and your therapist meets you in the virtual room. Sessions are not recorded.
  • Pay and claim as usual: Payment is processed the same way as in-person sessions, and you'll receive a receipt for your insurance claim. Direct billing works for virtual sessions too.

All you need is a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space where you can speak freely. Headphones help with both audio quality and privacy. If technology fails mid-session (it occasionally does), your therapist will call you and you'll finish the session or rebook without being charged for the lost time.

Who Online Therapy Suits

Virtual sessions remove most of the practical barriers that keep people from starting, or sticking with, therapy. Online therapy is a particularly good fit if you:

  • Live outside Ottawa, or anywhere in Ontario without convenient access to a therapist taking new clients
  • Have a schedule that makes commuting to appointments unrealistic: shift work, long hours, frequent travel
  • Are a parent or caregiver who can carve out 50 minutes at home but not a two-hour round trip
  • Have mobility limitations, chronic illness, or health circumstances that make travel difficult
  • Find that anxiety itself makes getting to an unfamiliar office the hardest part of seeking help
  • Simply feel more comfortable opening up from your own space

Online therapy isn't the right fit for every situation. If you're in acute crisis, or if you don't have reliable access to a private space, your therapist may recommend in-person sessions or additional supports, and will help you figure that out honestly during your consultation. If you are in crisis now, call or text 9-8-8, Canada's suicide crisis helpline, available 24/7.

Does Online Therapy Work as Well?

The core of effective therapy is the working relationship between you and your therapist, and that relationship builds over video much the way it does across a room. Virtual sessions follow the same structure, the same confidentiality standards, and the same treatment approaches as in-person care, and your therapist monitors progress the same way. If either of you feels the format is limiting the work, you can change it: that flexibility is the point.

Virtual Couples Therapy and EMDR

Two services people most often assume require an office both translate well to video:

  • Couples therapy: Partners can join from the same couch or from two different cities, useful for long-distance relationships, work travel, and co-parents in separate homes. Free 20-minute virtual couples consultations are available to see how the format feels. Learn more about couples therapy.
  • EMDR: Bilateral stimulation is delivered on screen, and the same eight-phase protocol applies: stabilization and resourcing always come before processing. Your therapist will confirm whether virtual EMDR is a good fit for your situation. Learn more about EMDR therapy.

Making the Most of Your Virtual Sessions

A few small habits make online therapy noticeably better:

  • Protect the space: Close the door, silence notifications, and let the people you live with know you're unavailable for the hour. If privacy at home is hard to come by, a parked car with headphones is a legitimate and popular therapy room.
  • Arrive a few minutes early: Joining with a couple of minutes to spare lets you test your audio and settle in, so the session starts with you present rather than flustered.
  • Wear headphones: They keep your therapist's side of the conversation private and make it easier to hear nuance.
  • Build in a buffer afterwards: In an office, the drive home gives you time to process. At home, the next demand is seconds away, so give yourself ten minutes to walk, stretch, or make tea before re-entering your day. Sessions can stir things up, and the transition matters.
  • Have a backup plan: Keep your phone nearby; if the video connection drops, your therapist will call and the session continues.

Fees, Insurance & Direct Billing

Virtual sessions cost exactly the same as in-person sessions: $170 to $185 for a standard 50-minute individual session, depending on the therapist. Psychotherapy and counselling services are HST-exempt, so no tax is added. Extended health plans that cover psychotherapy from a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) or Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) apply to virtual sessions the same way they do in person, and many of our therapists offer direct billing to insurers including Manulife, Canada Life, Sun Life, and Green Shield. See our insurance and direct billing page for details.
