About Individual Therapy

What is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counselling, is a collaborative process between a therapist and a client. It offers a safe, confidential, and supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and experiences. At Culminate Group, our goal is to help you gain deeper self-understanding, develop effective coping strategies, and work towards meaningful personal growth and improved well-being.

Who Can Benefit?

Individual therapy can be beneficial for anyone facing life challenges, seeking personal development, or wanting to improve their mental health. Common concerns addressed include:

  • Anxiety, stress, and panic attacks
  • Depression, low mood, and feelings of hopelessness
  • Relationship difficulties (though couples therapy might also be suitable)
  • Life transitions (career changes, relocation, grief, loss)
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Low self-esteem and confidence issues
  • Addiction and substance use concerns
  • Difficulties managing emotions
  • Exploring identity and purpose

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. It's a proactive step towards understanding yourself better and living a more fulfilling life.

Our Approach to Individual Therapy

At Culminate Group, we believe in a client-centered approach. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you, tailoring the sessions to your unique needs and goals. We draw from various evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Developing skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Exploring past experiences and unconscious patterns influencing present behavior.
  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches: Cultivating present-moment awareness and acceptance.

Your initial sessions will involve discussing your concerns, history, and goals for therapy. Together, you and your therapist will create a personalized treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does individual therapy cost in Ottawa?

Standard 50-minute individual sessions at Culminate Group are $170 to $185, depending on the therapist. Psychotherapy and counselling services are exempt from GST/HST, so no tax is added, and we offer a sliding scale for clients experiencing financial hardship.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

OHIP does not cover psychotherapy in private practice, but most extended health plans cover services from a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) or Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW). Many of our therapists offer direct billing to insurers including Manulife, Canada Life, Sun Life, and Green Shield. Confirm with your insurer which designations your plan covers.

How long is a therapy session?

Standard individual sessions are 50 minutes.

Can I do therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure virtual sessions to clients anywhere in Ontario, alongside in-person sessions at our Hintonburg office in Ottawa. You can switch between formats as your needs change.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no fixed number: it depends on your goals and what you're working through. Your therapist will set goals with you early on and review progress together regularly, so therapy continues only as long as it's useful to you.

How do I get started?

Start with a free 20-minute consultation: request one through our consultation page and an intake specialist will contact you, or book directly at culminategroup.janeapp.com. It's a chance to ask questions and see whether the therapist feels like a good fit before committing.
